Marcothon 2011

Marcothon 2010 was one of the reasons I managed to step up my running and have the philosphy that we should try and run every day if possible.
The challenge from this Facebook community is to run everyday at least 25 mins or 3miles (my rule is 5km minimum) through out December - including Christmas Day!! Last year was great fun with bundles of snow to overcome.
So this is my blog of my Marcothon 2012  attempt (which didn't start well a week before December when I received a serious knee injury thanks to my stupidity of playing 5-a-sides)....

  1. Day 1 (12:30): 5.20km 27m 06s "You ain't stopping me running"
Physio says stay of your knee for a few weeks...I say hell no, strap it up, it is Marcothon month!!! Minimum done just but loved the muddy hills today!!

  2. Day 2 (23:32): 5.12km 25m 55s "Cinderella Running"
After a day of travel to London, delayed flights and having long given up the idea of bring able to run today - i got home at 23:00 and climbed into bed. After moaning at the wife about already failing Marcothon on the second day for twenty minutes, I decided to seise the day, what was left of it, and got out of my warm bed.

So it turned out I hit the streets at 23:32 to tonight. Thanks to a ruined knee and too many drinks at Heathrow earlier I ran off into the night looking like a drunken peg-legged pirate. Battling the gales and high seas I managed to get back home with 5.12km in the bag and more importantly one minute to spare before midnight. Day two done and I haven't turned into a pumpkin. Anyone seen my glass trainer?

  3. Day 3 (09:00): 4.97km 24m 30s "Dog Day Morning"
No fairytale adventures this morning. However the decision to run to the pet shop and back made running the second half, with 5kg of dog food on my back, a nice little challenge. Steady 5km each day.

  4. Day 4 (20:19): 5.51km 28m 00s "Return of Bambi"
This is more like it, proper winter running. Ice + Snow = Bambi legs. A tentative 5.5km but very enjoyable in the brilliant crisp air.

  6. Day 6 (19:53): 9.95km 50m 12s "Jump, Jump"
nothing interesting except for the discovery that "Jump" by Val Halen is a great running song - especially the synth solo section which is like being in an 80s training montage

  7. Day 7 (06:26): 4.97km 28m 06s "Early Bird...feels rubbish"

  8. Day 8 (20:00): 5.33km 27m 19s "The Highs after The Lows"
Brilliant fun today in the wind and rain. The head wind on the turn was mental but free resistance training!! Love the highs and lows of Marcothon.

  13. Day 13 (18:49): 9.04km 44m 46s "Hurricane Bawbag"

Hurricane winds (aptly named "Hurricane Bawbag" in Scotland), trees fallen on the paths and hammering rain .... don't make me go outside!! Initially went out to do the minimum run possible but some how end up in town, only turned back as I was pressed for time.

Did a 9km in 45min, which in that wind was amazing. Something about this type of weather gets me in zone for running and could have went for hours.

  16. It is with a heavy heart that I have to bow out of Marcothon this year. I started the month with a bad cruciate injury and although I developed an effective peg legged running motion to get through 5km every day the injury isn't getting better....I have a huge amount of races to prepare for in 2012 so need to let it heal.

Already feel lost without my daily run, was hoping for some soft snow to help the injury but it wasn't to be. Keep it going everyone and hopefully join you all again before the year is out!!

Also means missing out on the Liverbird Double Marathon on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

On the plus side I am now at 1033 miles of running in 2012, next year's target is 2000+!!
